Painting Essentials- 5 Must Haves To Start Painting at home

I've had many students inquire about what basic art supplies they should purchase to begin painting at home. Creating art at home during your free time can be a relaxing and meditative way to express yourself. There are many techniques I can teach you during one of my Paint N Puff events, but I've always thought the best way to learn is by doing. Touch the brush to your canvas and experiment with different colors and stroke combinations. Aside from a space to create, you will need paint brushes, paint, and maybe even an easel. Some of you may already have the supplies you need. For those of you that don't, I've made it easy for you! I compiled a list below with a few of my favorites. I've included links to each item. So you will have no problem finding exactly what you need to let your inner artist run free!

1.) 16x20" White Canvas- For me this is the chosen size, but you can use whatever size canvas is best for you. You can find a 5 pack of 16x20" White Canvas here:

2.) Beginner Paint Brush Set- If you don't have a set already, you'll want to get a set with several sizes and shapes. I like this set because it has a little bit of everything, and even comes with a handy storage case. It has a super important brush too, a 1" and 2" flat paint brush. I call those my "Get Er Done Brushes!" These paint brushes are very useful when it comes to painting the background of your canvas. Some canvases are very large, and require even bigger brushes. However, I typically create my artwork on a 16x20" canvas, so a one inch brush is perfect for that. You can always build your setup once you learn more techniques, and figure out which types of brushes you like. Here is a nice little beginners set to get started with:

3.) Acrylic Paint Set- I always use Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint. They have a great color selection, and even make metalics and glitter paint! The pigments are really good, and you really can't beat the price. I'm constantly picking up new hues, as I'm sure you will too. Another great thing about Apple Barrel is you can find them anywhere. I found this perfect 16 piece set to help you start building your color collection.

4.) Painters Pallet- You could just use a paper plate if you have one handy. It definitely makes for an easy clean up. Or.. OR... you could get all fancy like and use a painters pallet! I prefer the clear non stick pallets because they are much easier to clean up for the next use. I like this 4 piece set!

5.) Paint Brush Basin- One of the most important things you must remember as a painter, is we are nothing without our brushes. Always be sure to keep your brushes clean while painting, and to thoroughly wash them once you've finished each session. You could easily use an old oddball cup, or a disposable cup if you currently have them in your cupboard. However, I like to use a cute little Paint Brush Basin. There are so many to choose from, but I like this simple one.

Once you gather all of your supplies to begin painting at home, the next thing you must do is create. Sling some paint, get messy and make some art. Soothe your soul with a bit of color. Don't be afraid to take chances. That's my favorite part!!
